Abstract

The evolution and spread of monkeypox was first identified in monkeys in 1958. The first cases of animal-human zoonotic transmission of this virus took place in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is an endemic disease of Africa, and until 2003, cases were reported in the United States, which shows that the importation of the disease is by travel or entry of animals from endemic areas. Consequently, in May 2022, the first case of the current outbreak in the United Kingdom is reported, and a public health emergency of international concern is declared by the World Health Organization on July 23, 2022. The main objective of the study is to carry out a documentary review regarding the evolution and spread of monkeypox worldwide. Materials and Methods: it is an updated documentary research based on the bibliographic review of scientific articles located in the Scielo search engines, DOAJ and Pubmed and Google Scholar. Results: monkeypox has been reported in several regions, with the region of the Americas reporting the highest number of cases with 58,636 cases and 76 deaths and 100 worldwide. In Panama, 160 positive cases have been reported, of which 158 are men and 2 women, Conclusions: monkeypox is a zoonotic tropical disease, endemic to some areas of Africa; however, it is no longer limited to endemic regions so it is a pathogen with global reach, of importance for Public Health. Therefore, it is very important to strengthen epidemiological surveillance systems and the capture and suspicion of cases to prevent its spread.
